About
Rafal Spice Company
Visiting
Rafal's is like taking a world tour. You smell Rafal's before
you see it. The spices waft through the air and lure you into
the exotic world of spice import. Brightly labeled bottles, boxes,
and bags, each containing an elixir to perk up any concoction,
line the shelves. Glass jars are filled with every spice and herb
imaginable, from adobo and asafetida to xanthan and za'atar. To
the left of the spice area, canisters of teas and kegs of coffee
beans lend their fragrances.
Behind
the cash register, Rafal sells an interesting and comprehensive
assortment of pepper mills, and a wide selection of pepper-oriented
spice mixes.
"I
don't smell anything, not a thing. The bankers love it because
the money smells like spices!" says Donald Rafal. "I'm
glad my father wasn't in the fish business." Spices and herbs,
coffees and teas give Rafal's its heady bouquet. Rafal finds his
store comfortable and the rent is cheap. His grandfather had owned
the premises since the 1920's.

Donald Rafal explains, Rafal is from Rafalsky. When my grandfather
came over from Russia, at the turn of the century, immigration
officers shortened our name. We say Rafal, like the ticket, raffle
ticket.
